Changing Demands for Accommodation (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area: TOURISM

Subject: CHANGING DEMANDS FOR ACCOMMODATION

Management issues:

The pressures and trends which have been identified have shown that the requirements and expectations of those visiting the area are changing and are likely to continue to change in future. Many visitors do not stay overnight, and the demand for traditional bed and breakfast style accommodation and for accommodation in smaller hotels is levelling out and in some parts of the area is decreasing. But the likely increase in the numbers of visitors from overseas, and a more discerning market, will mean that good quality accommodation and facilities will be required. At the same time, visitors from this country are tending to opt for a range of self-catering style holidays which provide a flexibility not associated with the more traditional types of accommodation. There is at present no real indication that additional accommodation is required, as, outwith the summer period, there is little evidence of unsatisfied demand. Many existing facilities will, however, have to be upgraded or converted to another form of use to meet future demands, and to ensure that the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area can still compete in an increasingly sophisticated market. Tourist Accommodation Grant Schemes do exist in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area but need more financial support.
