Impact of Tourism on Conservation (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area: TOURISM

Subject: IMPACT OF TOURISM ON LANDSCAPE AND AMENITY

Management issues:

The outstanding scenic quality of the landscape plays a vital role in attracting visitors and helping to sustain a successful tourist industry. While the Working Party accept that some change is inevitable and indeed necessary if the countryside is not to stagnate, there is concern that the landscape is under threat both from the range of visitor pressures in the more popular areas and because of the deteriorating economic conditions for a number of traditional land uses and some recent changes in land use practices. One welcome recent trend has been for some landowners and land managers to diversify into tourism as a means of improving their income levels, and such diversification can benefit the countryside - redundant farm buildings can be re-used and traditional structures such as dry stane dykes which would otherwise fall into disrepair can be maintained in good condition.
