Demand for Tourism (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area: TOURISM

Subject: DEMAND FOR TOURISM

Management issues:

The numbers of visitors to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are likely to continue to increase for the foreseeable future and the changing demands which those visitors make will also continue to grow and to some extent diversify. The Working Party considered whether the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area should continue to meet the demands made of it, or whether the overall carrying capacity has been reached or is being exceeded. It is clear that the carrying capacities of certain popular sites are being exceeded during peak periods, but it is also obvious that some of the facilities provided, and some of the more robust locations which are able to withstand visitor pressure, are being under-utilised. There are variations leading to concentrations of pressure at different times and at different places, and there is some scope for providing additional facilities at appropriate locations and for introducing a number of measures designed to discourage the use of particular sites and to divert pressure to more robust or under-used facilities.
