Inventory Topic Area: RECREATION
Subject: ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL FACTORS
Management issues:
The Working Party do not wish to over-emphasise the conflicts which can occur and the fact that large numbers of visitors come to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs is much to be welcomed. Recreation opportunities and the tourism associated with them contribute to the economic well-being of the area but, particularly at times of peak visitor pressure, there can be an element of intrusiveness which is not always conducive to harmony between the resident and visiting populations or those who earn their living from visitors and those who do not. That said, the quantity of visitors allows the provision of leisure and recreational facilities which it would be more difficult to justify in terms of the local population alone. There is, however, a delicate balance to be struck between the level of activity which sustains and enhances, and that which has the potential to disrupt. It reinforces our view of the need to recognise the existence of capacity constraints, and to work positively to the benefit of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area within those limits.
