Tensions between conservation and development objectives (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Subject TENSIONS BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES

Management issues:

The statutory planning framework (including development control policies, and policies safeguarding areas covered by conservation designations) tends to provide a regulatory check on development proposals generally, and on the development bias within recent tourism and rural development strategies. Underlying tensions are therefore evident. There will inevitably be instances where a lack of agreement on development criteria and inconsistencies in approach either damage conservation interests and the inherent attractiveness of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs area, or cause the unnecessary loss of otherwise acceptable development opportunities.
