Loss of Native Woodlands (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area: LAND USE - FARMING, FORESTRY COUNTRY SPORTS AND ESTATES

Subject: LOSS OF NATIVE WOODLANDS

Management issues:

The Nature Conservancy Council estimated that between 36% and 45% of the Ancient and Semi-natural Woodland in (the former) Strathclyde and Central Regions has been lost since 1945 and the most south westerly remnant of Caledonian Pinewood in Scotland at Glen Falloch is so badly degraded that it has been monitored since 1957, not for a decline in area, but in the number of trees surviving. Developments in 1993 to encourage the regeneration of the native pinewood at Glen Falloch provided new hope and a positive example of what can be done with cooperation between government bodies and private individuals. Areas covered by the Woodland Grant Scheme are well protected, and other areas of felling (including the need for replanting) are controlled by the Forestry Commission's Felling Licence procedure, but casual felling below the minimum level for licences, development pressures, and, most significantly, grazing pressure all take their toll. Some farmers are driven by economic necessity to use their woodlands for short term benefits of shelter and grazing, to the long term detriment of the resource.
