Inventory Topic Area: HERITAGE CONSERVATION
Subject: EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SUPPORT
There is a clear need to provide better interpretation for the general public to explain what is being protected and why. The aim is to increase understanding and appreciation and thereby encourage support for conservation objectives. Many initiatives relating to environmental education and interpretation have already been taken. These include the provision of tourist information and visitor centres by Councils, in partnership with the Area Tourist Board (ATB). The ATB, the District Councils and bodies such as the Forestry Commission have also produced a wide variety of print items and educational packs to assist visitors. Other initiatives include those by the Local Education Authorities through their field study and outdoor pursuit centres at place like Arrochar and Strathyre, the Forestry Commission through it Queen Elizabeth Park Visitor Centre (the David Marshall Lodge), and the Scottish Youth Hostel Association through special hostel based programmes. The Loch Lomond Park Authority and the ATB have specific responsibilities to fulfil and they intend to build on their existing services by establishing additional visitor centres, exhibitions, signing systems and a range of publications.
