Inventory Topic Area: HERITAGE CONSERVATION
Subject: RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Management issues:
Hill walking, fell running and mountain biking are activities which may disturb breeding bird communities on the open ground of the high plateaux, and the problems can be exacerbated by accompanying dogs and the erosion of sensitive vegetation. There is little hard evidence of negative effects in the uplands, other than in the immediate vicinity of access routes themselves; but this is likely to be a potential issue of high profile as the numbers engaged in these activities increase. The erosion of sensitive mountain vegetation, which takes a considerable time to recover, is also of concern. Access to vulnerable lowland habitats and some water-based recreational uses of lochs can create problems of erosion and disturbance of wildlife, including fish. Litter is a particular issue throughout the area.
