Impact on the Natural Heritage (Issue)

Inventory Topic Area: ACCESS INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE

Subject: IMPACT ON THE NATURAL HERITAGE

Management issues:

The increasing volume of pedestrian access to the uplands, and the difficulty of preventing damage means the Working Party have considered the option of restricting or even barring access to some extremely fragile areas. This could be done in some cases by using the "long walk in" principle and withdrawing enabling facilities such as stiles, bridges and easy access points. Although there has been some localised physical damage, there is no evidence that significant ecological damage results from the current levels of access. On the lochs, however, there is concern about the disturbance of aquatic life by powered craft, the reduction in the numbers of wildfowl on Loch Lomond in winter, erosion of loch shores, and the adverse effects on fishing and the introduction of non-native fish by anglers.
