API - interpretation of 1:24 000 panchromatic aerial photography onto acetate overlays transferred to 1:25 000 O/S Pathfinder bases. A hierarchical land cover classification was used, with 6 principal features (farms and developed rural land; bare ground; miscellaneous features eg built-up land; woodland; agricultural land; semi-natural ground vegetation) 127 classes with additional 2 class mosaics. Maps were digitised using TYDAC SPANS. Photointerpretations were validated against ground survey of 702 1km x 1km squares within a stratified random sampling scheme.
