Eutrophication Survey - Routine Monitoring of Water Quality (Chemical) : Abstract

For this sampling programme, a basic suite of determinands are analysed for each sample taken at the listed sites. These are as follows:

Suspended solids

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (ATU)

Dissolved Oxygen

Temperature

pH

Alkalinity

Total Hardness

Conductivity

Ammoniacal Nitrogen

Nitrite Nitrogen

Nitrate Nitrogen

Phosphate Phosphorus

Chloride

Surveys of Freshwater Lochs

Eutrophication Studies

In view of the increasing concern about the effects of eutrophication and acidification on freshwater lochs, a long-term monitoring programme has been set up for the four largest lochs in the former CRPB's area (Lomond, Awe, Doon and Eck), which are important for conservation, recreation or water supply. Loch Lomond is sampled every year, but the other lochs are to be monitored every three years. Loch Lomond is to be sampled in 1996/7.

Chemical samples are taken 12 times a year in Loch Lomond at seven sampling stations situated along the centre line of the loch. Loch Eck and Loch Doon are sampled twice a year at three sites. Integrated samples of water are collected to a depth of 5 m and analysed for the following

Chlorophyll-a

Silica

Total phosphorus

Orthophosphate

Total dissolved phosphorus

Ammoniacal nitrogen

Nitrite nitrogen

Nitrate nitrogen

Secchi depth transparency

Additional determinands will be measured on samples from Loch Lomond Environmental Change Network sites.

Two types of biological sample are taken:

Integrated water samples to a depth of 5m for phytoplankton counts taken at the same frequency as the chemical samples at two Environmental Change Network sites in Loch Lomond and at one site in Lochs Eck and Doon.

Ten replicate grabs for examination of benthic invertebrates taken annually from the two Loch Lomond Environmental Change Network sties and one every three years from one site in Lochs Eck and Doon.
